General Rules

The core principles of mahjong that apply across most international rulesets.

Tile Types

Bamboo (Souz) 36 tiles (1–9 × 4)

Numbered suit represented by bamboo sticks. The 1-bamboo often features a special bird design.

Characters (Manz) 36 tiles (1–9 × 4)

Numbered suit featuring Chinese characters for numbers 一 through 九.

Circles (Pinz) 36 tiles (1–9 × 4)

Numbered suit featuring circles/coins, sometimes called Dots.

Winds 16 tiles (4 × 4)

East, South, West, North. The round wind and seat wind provide bonus scoring.

Dragons 12 tiles (3 × 4)

Red (中), Green (發), White (白). Each provides a bonus when used as a triplet or quad.

How a Round Flows

  1. 1
    Build the Wall:All 136 tiles are shuffled face-down and arranged into a square wall of four sides, each 34 tiles long in two rows.
  2. 2
    Deal the Tiles:The dealer draws 14 tiles; the other three players draw 13 each. The dealer begins the round.
  3. 3
    Draw & Discard:On your turn, draw one tile from the wall and discard one face-up. Other players may claim your discard.
  4. 4
    Claim Discards:Claim a discard to complete a Pung (3 of a kind), Kong (4 of a kind), or Chow (3-tile sequence from the left player).
  5. 5
    Win or Draw:The round ends when a player wins (declares Mahjong) or the wall runs out (draw). Scoring is then calculated.

Winning Conditions

A standard winning hand consists of exactly 14 tiles in this structure:

4 Melds
Sequences or triplets

Each meld is either a Pung (3 identical), Kong (4 identical), or Chow (3 consecutive in one suit).

1 Pair
The eyes (jantou)

Two identical tiles that complete the hand. Some special hands use a different structure.

Tenpai
One tile from winning

Your hand needs exactly one more tile to complete. This is when you can declare Riichi.

No Chombo
No false declarations

Claiming a discard you cannot legally use, or falsely declaring Mahjong, results in a penalty.
